At the frontiers of human mind
Who We Are
Our Lab's full name stands for Mental Health Innovation, Neuropsychology, Decoding Emotions & AI Laboratory reflects our core mission: to understand the neural foundations of human social, cognitive, and emotional life — and how these processes interact with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Led by Professor Benjamin Becker, our team brings together a diverse group of researchers spanning neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, computer science, and clinical research. Together, we investigate how the brain regulates social and emotional behavior, how this regulation breaks down in mental illness, and how new technologies — from AI systems to brain-based interventions — can help restore and enhance mental health.
Our work bridges basic science and clinical application, with findings published in over 350 peer-reviewed studies and translated directly into randomized clinical trials and real-world mental health interventions.

Our Research
🔄 Real-Time brain imaging Guided Neurofeedback
We employ cutting-edge neurofeedback protocols (fMRI, fNIRS) that allow participants to observe and modulate their own brain activity in real time,
💻 Computational &
AI-Driven Modeling
We build computational models, helping to formalize theories of brain function and generate testable predictions about human-AI interaction.
🧠 functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI)
Our team has deep expertise in fMRI to map the underlying neural circuits, identifying how brain activity relates to behavior and mental health symptoms.
💊 Pharmacological Neuromodulation
We investigate how neuropeptides, such as oxytocin and components of the renin-angiotensin system, influence brain function and behaviors.
🧪 Neuropsychological & Experimental Testing
Our team uses validated assessments to understand how social-cognitive and affective functioning processes operate in daily life and break down in mental illness.
🤖 Machine Learning–Based Neural Decoding
We apply ML algorithms to data to decode patterns of brain activity, enabling more precise prediction and classification of cognitive and emotional states.
DIVERSity & Collaboration
How We Work
We believe the biggest questions about mind and technology can't be answered by one field or geography alone.
MIND&AI Lab primary team members span The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). Both universities are home to vibrant communities of research laboratories from cognitive science, neuroscience, clinical psychology, and biomedical engineering — providing rich, collaborative environments for interdisciplinary work.
Beyond these, our research network extends globally — through collaborations with the Global Brain Consortium, international clinical trial partners, and institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America — reflecting the international, multi-site nature of our research team and projects.
